Troubleshooting the "Dead" Bosch IDS Inverter Board

The Symptom: The 7-segment display on the outdoor inverter board is completely blank. Even after replacing the board, the unit remains unresponsive as if it has no power.

The Real Cause: The inverter board often detects a "hard short" in the outdoor fan motor or the compressor. To prevent catastrophic damage, the board’s internal power supply shuts down the DC bus, making the board appear dead.

The Diagnostic Process: Before condemning the board, use the process of elimination to find the short:

  • Step 1: Disconnect the outdoor fan motor harness from the board. Restore power. If the display lights up, the fan motor is faulty.

  • Step 2: If the board is still blank, kill power and disconnect the compressor leads (U, V, W). Restore power.

  • The Result: When the shorted component is disconnected, the board's logic side will power back up.
